"The invitation to compose an anthem for Easter Sunday from my home parish of St. Dominic's Catholic Church in San Francisco, Simon Berry, conductor, was for me an opportunity to fulfill a long-desired wish: to respond to Randall Thompson's 'Alleluia,' which I have known by heart since I was 15 years old. I have long admired the expressive lyricism and immensely satisfying formal unfolding of Thompson's masterpiece. My setting is for mixed chorus divisi in 8 parts, and is based on two contrasting melodic motives which are continually developed and move through many tonalities before returning to the bright opening tonality of A major." - written by David Conte

Commissioned by the Bay Choral Guild, "The Spring of Life" is based on three texts taken from The Love Poems of Marichiko by Kenneth Rexroth. Composed for unaccompanied 6-part chorus (SSATBB), each of the settings presents a different aspect of spring. The Full Moon of Spring speaks of the serene crystalline light of spring evenings with a colorful harmonic palette. This Spring describes the sunrise over the ocean, first in simple musical textures. These textures later develop into a very broad harmonic expanse delineated with rhythmic layering of the choral voices. Spring Is Early begins and ends with a short, joyful fugue. The middle section is a love poem in which the speaker compares the beloved to the rich evening aromas of blossoming flowers.
"The Spring of Life" was first performed by the Bay Choral Guild, conducted by Sanford Dole, in a series of three concerts on March 18, 19, and 20, 2011. Total performance time: approximately 5 minutes.

Commissioned for the Saint Louis Chamber Chorus (Philip Barnes, Artistic Director) in 2008, this luxuriant six-voice stanzaic part-song sets an evocative love poem by Civil War author, Sidney Lanier. Colorful descriptions of a seascape sunset (along with references to Ancient Egyptian culture) are presented by Lanier as a powerful metaphor of human love.

Gregory Hutter's setting of Carl Sandburg's bucolic poem symbolizing love, loss, and remembrance, is appropriately tonal, harmonically rich, featuring closely-spaced harmonies. The two stanzas representing the end of summer followed by the coloristic beauty and reflection of autumn are set in the tonalities of F major and F minor, respectively. This setting is suitable for high school, college, community, church, and professional choruses.
