Christmas is celebrated throughout the world - sometimes at the end of December, sometimes at the beginning of January. And everywhere, singing Christmas carols is part of the celebrations. Some carols, such as Adeste fideles or Stille Nacht are sung throughout the world, but many countries have their own particular carols which reflect their own customs and traditions. These Christmas carols from all over the world feature in the latest instalment of the LIEDERPROJEKT which is published in autumn 2015.
The new choral anthology Christmas carols of the world will enrich the Christmas repertoire for choirs, with lots of exciting choral arrangements of a selection of 85 international Christmas carols. It is edited by Volker Hempfling and contains arrangements by composers from 23 countries in their original languages, including John Rutter, John Høybye, Mark Sirett, Wolfram Buchenberg, Matti Hyökki and Fredo Jung.
The settings for mixed choir a cappellare extremely varied, ranging from easy to difficult. Some have accompaniment for keyboard instrument. A CD with samples from the book sung by the Calmus Ensemble Leipzig and the Athesinus Consort Berlin is included to the director's score.

Rich harmonies serve to bring new expression to familiar Christmas material which is written for SATB voices and piano, with scope for optional congregational singing.

This arrangement was written for Andrew Earis and the choir of St Martin in the Fields, London. I have performed this in a variety of ways including the use of a soloing instrument (eg sax, trumpet, trombone) in the middle section after the 2nd time bar, using the chords for some gentle improvising. A bass player could also be used after verse 1, allowing the piano to play more chords in the left hand and improvise in the right hand.

The soprano part moves independently and comments, so to speak, on the melodic happenings.

"I have embedded this internationally well-known melody in a harmonic room of bells which is rendered by the male voices. To enhance the feeling of two independent entities, the melody and the bell ostinato are performed in different metres. Tension increases in the second verse when the melody is performed in a canon but dissipates at the end of the piece."

"I asked my friend, the poet Einar Askestad, if he could write a poem for me about love between father and son, brothers and God. I felt that these forms of love are seldom sung about. The poem moved me greatly and I have tried to put music to these words which is simple yet full of beauty. In the four movements of this suite-like piece, various aspects of these relationships are conveyed."

The piece was originally written in Russian and dedicated by the composer to her father. The recurrent motif of different "bells" makes the memories of the old times come back. Music is elegant and gentle with the colors of various harmonies being so rich that people are deeply touched while listening. This piece is also a challenge for singers to express emotions in different music sections. The "Church" is a symbol for time imprint.
