The original poems were written by TANIKAWA Shuntaro, one of the greatest poets in Japan. In the collection of poems, they are printend in both English and Japanese. These pieces were created in Tokyo. With the sound the composer wanted to express the imagination in which the city of Tokyo shows itself, the vigor and emptiness of the people who reside there, and hopes people can enjoy the urban, stylish and ironic atmosphere.

They seem, at first, to be opposites, but finally both are conscious of and repect "words."Performaner should express the images inspired by the words and music to the utmost, and to fill the time and space with rich and flexible expressions.

This song cycle was originally composed during October of 1993 and January of 1994 just before the composer leaving for Hungary for further study. In composing this suite, he was strongly influenced by unaccompanied Hungarian and Scandinavian works for choirs. He hopes his work could assist choirs to develop their ears through this suite.
"Life Defends" was elected in 1995 as one of the compulsory work in 48th National Choral Competition (G3). It made Matsushita Ko become famous and widely well-known.
